For Mother's Day this year, I treat my mam to afternoon tea, we're massive afternoon tea fans, so I couldn't think of anything better. We drive past Horton Grange Hotel all the time, it's just up from Blagdon, near Ponteland in Northumberland, so I thought I would surprise my mam and book us in.
I booked online, and let's just say, their booking system needs to be made clearer. The website stated that they serve afternoon tea everyday after 12. I booked a table for 2 at 12:45, no options to stipulate the menu etc, assuming that afternoon tea would be available. We were taken in and sat down and presented with the only menu, a 3 course Sunday lunch for an eye watering £30 each. After asking the waiter, he told us that we hadn't booked for afternoon tea (no option to choose on the website booking is terrible, just ring!). Anyway, the waiter was lovely and asked if we would be able to have one anyway, which we could, although we had to sit in the restaurant instead of the lounge, I wasn't complaining, it was lovely!
Our tea consisted of a pot of tea or coffee each, 4 sandwiches each (real salmon, cucumber, cheese savoury and egg), all delicious! Then we had 2 scones each, 1 plain and 1 fruit, these were served with gorgeous clotted cream and homemade tangy apple/redcurrant jam, also totally yummy! Finally we each had a range of petit fours and a mini chocolate, raspberry, vanilla trifle, all amazing!
The setting here is lovely, nice gardens, great airy spacious restaurant with a nice chilled atmosphere. The tea cost us £16 each, which I think is reasonable for such nice food/setting. Me and my mam both really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely go back!
Aw, this sounds so perfect for Mothers Day! Its nice to read that you had such good service from them too - a shame the booking system didn't work out originally though. At least you'll know for next time! Lucy, www.aspectatorsport.com xx

DeleteI love going for afternoon tea, I definitely don't do it enough! I remember going once in the middle of winter and we sat infront of an open fire for ages drinking hot chocolate and eating yummy cakes. It was snowing too which made it even more perfect! Such a shame you had a bit of trouble with your booking, hope it didn't spoil your afternoon too much!
