If there's one thing I love about Christmas it has to be the markets! We do have a nice market here in Newcastle and there are lots of other smaller local ones that are nice, but I really wish there was a really big one here. Me and my mam like to go on little festive trips to the markets and this year we decided on York. Don't forget to check out last year's post on the Edinburgh Christmas Market! Our day in York started off very very rainy and it continued that way, it didn't stop once, all day. So unfortunately we were pretty much soaked the whole time, which I won't lie did dampen our spirits (no pun intended!).
The first place we sheltered was Bill's. I've been to the one in Durham a couple of times but never for breakfast, why they haven't opened one in Newcastle yet I don't know! We shared a pot of tea and loved the teapot so much that we bought the same one in red! Love that they have they're own little shop! I decided on Bill's Vegetarian Breakfast which came with 2 poached eggs, tomatoes, hummus, mushrooms, guacamole, sweet chilli sauce, basil and toast. It was so good! I love when the vegetarian options are a little different! My mam went for Bill's Breakfast which came with Cumberland sausage, fried eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, smoked streaky bacon and toast. Her's looked fab too and she really enjoyed it.
So after our breakfast we started to mooch round the markets, which unlike Edinburgh etc, they are dotted around the centre, they have a little trail for you to follow. I really didn't get the best photographs, it was pouring all day and I had to just keep whipping my camera out when I could! So we started out on the trail and visited some crafty markets and popped into some shops along the way. It was my first time in an Oliver Bonas shop, I totally fell in love with it, again why don't we have one in Newcastle?!
Our next stop was for a little pick me up. When looking in the York Chocolate Story Gift Shop we fancied a cup of their hot chocolate each, I went for the orange milk hot chocolate and my mam went for the caramel milk hot chocolate, both with cream and marshmallows. Honestly this was probably the best hot chocolate I've ever had, so creamy and the orange flavour was amazing, sometimes it doesn't come through too much but it was so delicious!
Our final stop was to the biggest market area with plenty of stalls and a huge tipi for drinks and food. I got some roasted pecans which were caramelised and just generally amazing! Me and my mam both had a hot spiced cider which was so yummy, we definitely needed it to warm us up, at this point we were sopping wet and freezing, really ready to get back to the train station. To be honest, I was a little let down by the market, although I do think the weather had a lot to do with it and to top it off our train was delayed by an hour! I really fancy going to the Manchester markets next year, they look great!

I think your photos are still great! I would have liked to have visited the Christmas markets, maybe next year. Yorks a great place to shop even when the markets aren't on, we went in September and I was amazed how many little streets there was.
ReplyDeleteEven if it was just cold but dry you probably would have enjoyed it more, it's such a faff having to hold on to an umbrella at the same time!

Aww sounds like a nice day out (despite the rain!). The food and drink you had there sounds really good. I’m in envy of those hot chocolates you and your Mum had, they sounds unreal! I sometimes go to York so might have to check that chocolate shop out. I really love your photographs, they seem to tell a story and the little gift huts look pretty cool! :-) xx

I usually go to York's Christmas Market every year, it's so magical! Next time I visit I'll have to pop to York Chocolate Story - their hot chocolate looks delicious! Rosie x
ReplyDeleteI had a lovely little festive trip to York in December too and it also rained when I was there! Me and my friends took shelter in Thor's tipi where I had a gorgeous spiced apple drink and I bought some sheepskin mittens for my niece from the market. Bliss!
