North East Visits | Birthday Meal at Gusto Newcastle

Last week for my birthday, me and Steven went out for a meal in Newcastle, we decided on Gusto on the Quayside, we've been a few times and it's always been really nice so it was a safe bet for us! If you haven't been before it's just behind the Pitcher & Piano, make sure you sit upstairs for views of the bridges, also I'd recommend requesting a booth when you book! After we were seated we dove straight into the cocktail menu, obviously! I went for a Raspberry and Rosemary Sling and Steven had a Redcurrant Mai Tai, both £8.50 each but made so well, super delicious and refreshing!

For starters I decided on the Calamari with Lemon Mayonnaise (£7.25) and Steven went for the Meatballs in a Spiced Tomato Sauce with Bruschetta (£6.50). Unfortunately I was really disappointed with my calamari, I felt that it was quite rubbery and the batter was super greasy, not great! I've never had a bad dish here so and didn't expect it to be disappointing. But luckily Steven really enjoyed his meatballs, they smelled great!

Onto our mains, I did quite fancy a pizza but I'm terrible and I mean terrible at cutting pizza's and they come with their own slice, the last time I totally butchered it! So I went for the safe option of Tagliatelle with Smoked Salmon and Dill (£12.50) and Steven who can like a normal person manage to cut a pizza chose the BBQ Chicken (£11.75). The waitress was quite liberal with the parmesan (I'm not complaining!) so that's pretty much all you can see in the photo! But I really enjoyed my pasta, it redeemed my let down of a starter! Steven really liked his pizza too, again this smelled amazing, I was a little jealous!

So finally after another round of cocktails (I went for the Peach & Passionfruit Julep and Steven had the Cherry & Coconut Sour again £8.50 each and super yummy!) we decided on pudding. Steven was adamant he wasn't having a pud, but since we'd flown through starters and mains I convinced him. The conversation started with him saying he only wanted something light, but with me banging on about the Nutella and Mascarpone Calzone, he caved! (Always awkward when the waitress assumes you're sharing one and you have to say no actually you want two!). I had this the last time I came and it's so so good! I'd definitely recommend it!

Also I'd recommend getting a Dining Club card, Steven has one and because we'd used it while booking the reservation online we got 20% off of our bill, which is pretty good considering it was a Friday night too! Overall I had a really nice night here, with the starter being the only let down, the mains, puds and cocktails made up for it! It's quite pricey here but the atmosphere, service, food and drinks are great and I'd recommend a visit for a special occasion!
